Henry Gilfillan
Partner – Africa International Advisors
Henry Gilfillan is a seasoned energy strategy expert and the Integrated Energy Practice Leader at Africa International Advisors (AIA). With more than two decades of leadership experience across Southern Africa’s energy and chemicals sectors, Henry brings deep expertise in strategy development, regulatory engagement, and energy market transformation.
Prior to joining AIA, Henry served as Vice President of Strategic Intelligence at Sasol, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s long-term energy strategy and advancing its transition toward a low-carbon future. His tenure included the development of Sasol’s 2050 regional strategy, successful carbon tax negotiations with National Treasury, and the conceptualisation of an innovative competition law remedy that redefined regulatory compliance in South Africa's fertiliser sector.
Henry has led landmark initiatives such as the pre-feasibility of a North-South gas pipeline from Mozambique to South Africa, helping lay the groundwork for regional energy security. He has advised governments, regulators, and corporations across Southern Africa on gas markets, decarbonisation, and energy infrastructure planning — most recently leading strategic projects for the Western Cape Government, SANEDI, and the Eswatini Energy Regulator.
Henry holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science Honours degree from the University of South Africa. He is passionate about harnessing the energy transition to unlock inclusive growth and re-position the Southern African region as a competitive, low-carbon economic hub.
